The covered Spitalfields is situated in the East End of Central London just a short walk from Farringdon Street station. Originally a Catholic Priory dating from the 11th Century it went through a number of uses prior to becoming a produce market in the 18th Century. In 1991 it gave its name to New Spitalfields Market in Leyton, where fruit and vegetables are still traded. In 2005, a regeneration programme of the Market resulted in the new public spaces of Bishops Square and Crispin Place. The regeneration has produced a truly eclectic mix of fashion, food and lifestyle offerings that generate an annual (preC19) footfall of 9 million.
